The guy that I was working out with was cranking his forearm into my throat during chokes — not cool at all.
Now, even the morning after, I feel like I have a sore throat. It hurts to swallow, eat, etc. I hope this goes away!
Funny thing is, the guy that was choking me is like 120 lbs. and also a white belt. But at least once, I tapped and he did not stop. No big deal, so I did not try to overreact in class. I chose not to roll with him, for fear that I would try to get revenge (I weigh about 180).
…
I am of the opinion that if you are not respectful/mature enough to release the hold when your partner taps, you should not be participating in combative sports. This guy will lose rolling partners pretty quickly, some of that will come back around.
BUT
There are ways to deal with a fucking asshole that doesn’t involve putting their body at risk for serious injury. These are the unspoken things you learn in the wrestling room. I’m sure some of them apply to Jiu Jitsu.
- In a tie up, grind your forehead into the temple of your opponent. Be careful to grind and not to butt. This is incredibly unpleasant.
- When grabbing for a collar tie up, instead of grabbing with a flat hand, cup your hand so that there’s a good amount of air there when you bring it down on the back of your partner’s neck. Bring it down nice and firm when you snap their head down for the collar tie. This is a very dull and harmless, but again, very unpleasant blow to he back of the neck. It does not feel good.
- When in side control, grind your chin into their cheek bone/temple. This is doubly awful if you haven’t been paying attention to your grooming.
- When sprawling to defend a takedown, be sure to throw your hip bone right into their ear. A few times for each attempt.
- If you get a chance to use a 3/4 Nelson (unlikely in Jiu Jitsu) be sure to grind/dig your elbow into the back of their head.
- You can get some good force on your cross-face without cocking it back/raising your arm. Sometimes you don’t need force/acceleration either. It feels really awful when you grind your forearm across their nose when you cross-face.
- When trying for an RNC, instead of exposing their neck by pulling their head back by the forehead, lift their head by putting your forearm under their nose.
- Ride REALLY heavy from the top. Hips down heavy on the crab ride.
- Heavy hips on the Saturday Night ride. This is also a good position for chin-digging.
There are plenty others that I’m probably missing. If done correctly, your partner won’t know that you are fucking with them. Instead, they will just feel absolutely miserable when they’re done with their workout.
